The ‘Big Score’ Dashboard Training for Buford High School Students
In a joint effort to improve both technology and instruction, Buford City Schools announced the addition of two new scoreboards for BHS baseball and softball fields, while providing training students to learn how to use them.
The two Formetco digital LED matrix boards are expected to be installed before the 2022 baseball season, and the students will be the ones to operate the systems for games.
Formetco is the nation’s leading supplier and manufacturer to the outdoor advertising industry and is headquartered in Gwinnett County on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. For the past 50 years, they have provided large-scale electronic scoring systems to venues ranging from the former Turner Field, now Georgia State University Stadium, to Lumpkin County High School and to countless others.
In mid-January, BHS students attended a training day on the software and operation of digital billboards at Formetco’s Duluth campus, alongside BHS career technology professor Nicholas Beshiri, baseball coach Stuart Chester and softball coach Trent Adams.
“Students will score big, so to speak, while learning to use these new matrix charts,” said Katie Strickland, Buford’s director of strategic communications. Strickland believes the real-world experience these students will gain from this hands-on learning experience will prepare them for a number of broadcast technology jobs in the future.
With major sports venues and several professional sports teams calling the Atlanta metro area home, the possibility of eventually landing such a job is not out of reach for students who have already had some level of on-the-job experience. while still in high school. If nothing else, this is definitely a great opportunity and resume-building experience for students interested in future careers in sports broadcasting and technology.
