Platte earns back-to-back Sunshine League wins over Corsica/Stickney – Mitchell Republic

PLATTE — Head-to-head twice in two days at each other’s ballpark, Platte edged Corsica/Stickney in back-to-back Sunshine League amateur baseball games on Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2.

In Friday’s match against Corsica, Platte beat Corsica/Stickney 5-4 in 10 innings. At Platte on Saturday, Platte scored seven runs in the first two innings as they cruised to an 11- 1 at home.

Platte trailed 4-1 going into the eighth inning, but the Killer Tomatoes scored four runs over the final three innings to steal the win. Richard Sternberg, Hayden Kuiper and Ryan Allen all singled in the eighth inning to help tie the game at four. As Grant Doom stole third base in the top of the 10th inning, Corsica/Stickney erred on the pitch at third and Doom reached home, giving Platte his first lead since the second inning.

As Platte held on for the win, Sternberg went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Sheldon Gant went 2-for-5 at home plate, including a home run and an RBI. Ryan Allen had two hits and two RBIs, while Hayden Kuiper had two hits and an RBI. Doom picked up the win for the Killer Tomatoes, giving up zero hits, zero runs, and struck out six in 2 ⅔ innings pitched. Owen London started the game at the mound for Platte, struck out six and allowed four runs on six hits in 7 ⅓ innings.

Kris Menning led Corsica/Stickney with three hits while Ryan Buck and Blake Moke had one each. Menning and Moke also had one RBI each. Caleb Crist was defeated by the Horned Frogs, striking out 14 batters, but allowed ten hits and four earned runs in 10 innings.

The next day in Platte, the Killer Tomatoes got off to a fast start as Hunter Hewitt hit an RBI double and Grant Doom hit a two-run homer to give Platte a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Hayden Kuiper and Derek Soukup doubled in the second inning and Ryan Allen singled to help extend Platte’s lead to seven after two innings. Platte scored four more runs in the final two innings to seal the win.

Kuiper went 4 for 5 with two RBIs while Doom went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Doom also led the team with three runs scored, while Allen had two hits and led the team with three RBIs. Richard Sternberg and Soukup also had two hits apiece while Hewitt had two hits and drove in two runs. Kelby VanDerWerff picked up the win for Platte, allowing four hits over four innings. Myles Kott struck out three batters in three innings.

Kris Menning had two hits while Nathan Blom had a hit and an RBI for the Horned Frogs. Lincoln Huff also contributed. Blake Moke took the loss, allowing nine earned runs and 14 hits in five innings. Moke also struck out five batters, while Gavin Zomer struck out four and allowed three hits in 1 ⅔ innings pitched.

Platte (8-3) will face Alexandria on Tuesday July 5, while Corsica/Stickney will face Winner/Colome on Thursday July 7.
