Tulsa, Okla. –Tulsa Oilers Football, a proud member of the IFL, announced on Saturday that the name of the Tulsa indoor football team is the Oilers.
After thousands of team name suggestions online, Tulsa Oilers owner Andy Scurto combined the influence of fan thoughts and his vision for how the team would represent the city of Tulsa before deciding on the name of the Oilers.
“We are very grateful for all the contributions our fans have given us on a team name,” said Andy Scurto, owner of the Tulsa Oilers. “There were many good suggestions and some clear favorites. All of these contributions were evaluated and considered when determining the name of the team. After careful consideration of all contributions, we have come to the conclusion that the Tulsa Oilers brand is well known in the Tulsa area, a fan favorite and a name we should carry on with our football team. The Tulsa Oilers brand is synonymous with family fun with ice hockey, rinks, skating on ice, fun activities and now, indoor football.The Tulsa Oilers brand stands for fun and exciting entertainment and it was the obvious choice for our new football team.We are thrilled that the football team represents the brand as the Tulsa Oilers football team.
The Oilers name has represented the professional hockey franchise in Tulsa since 1928 and has also represented a professional minor league baseball team that played occasionally in Tulsa from 1905 to 1976.
At a joint open house for the Oilers hockey and football teams on Saturday at the BOK Center, fans witnessed the unveiling of the football team’s name and colors, as well as primary and secondary logos. A lucky fan named Elizabeth Twist has been selected to win four free season tickets for the upcoming football season as a reward for being drawn from a group that originally submitted the name ‘Oilers’ as a team name suggestion. The team is represented by the color “Gold” which represents the highest standards the Tulsa community holds for all of its endeavors, and “Oil Black” to represent the crude oil discovered in this once unpredictable oil frontier.
“While we are thrilled that the new indoor football team represents the Tulsa Oilers brand of entertainment as the Tulsa Oilers football team,” owner Andy Scurto said. “We also wanted to make sure the football team had its own identity. It was important to us that the football team had its own set of colors, logos and branding. We are excited to link the Oilers name to a logo that highlights Oklahoma’s oil heritage with a drop of oil and a derrick combined with the image of a football to tie it all together. The new colors and logo combine the football and the Oilers to create a brand that fits well with the Tulsa Oilers.
The reveal of the team’s identity is just the beginning of the journey for Tulsa’s new professional sports franchise. The Oilers will begin their inaugural season in 2023.
