Cloquet Pine Journal 2022 All-Area Baseball Team – Cloquet Pine Journal
CLOQUET — With just one senior in the 2022 Cloquet Pine Journal all-area baseball first team, the draft roster is dominated by a pair of juniors and three underclassmen.
Esko had the most caps highlighted by junior Cale Haugen, the all-around player of the year. He is joined by his brother, freshman Sam Haugen, as well as sophomores Finn Furcht and Isaak Sertich.
Juniors Kollin Bonneville (Cloquet) and Caleb Hautajarvi of Barnum complete the three remaining places. Henry Ribich of Moose Lake-Willow River is the only senior on the team.
Wedge Haugen Clint Austin / Duluth News Tribune – Finished with team highs in batting average (.465), on-base plus slugging (1.507), extra-base hits (16), RBIs (32), runs (39) while drawing the most of steps (21). Also led the club in stolen bases with 24. – The Ace of the Eskomos pitching staff went 3-2, with an .833 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 42.0 innings pitched. – First team class AA all states, Polar League all conferences – “(Cale Haugen) and Ty Christensen were both voted captains by their teammates this year as juniors, and normally we don’t have juniors as captains. But those two, along with our senior Kade Gonsorowski , have taken on that role, and I think they’ve done a good job over the season,” Esko coach Ben Haugen said. |
Kollin Bonneville ![]() Contribution / Kollin Bonneville – Led the Lumberjacks in batting average (.373), plate appearances (67), hits (19) and walks (14). – Second team all-Lake Superior Conference – “Bonneville is an excellent athlete in three sports. He was our most consistent player all season as a forward and as a shortstop,” said Cloquet coach Tyler Olin. |
Finn Furcht ![]() Clint Austin / Duluth News Tribune – Average of .323 at plate with 20 hits, 25 RBI and 15 runs. Had seven extra hits and walked 10. – Was 7-2 on the mound to beat the Eskomos in wins. Finished with a 4.28 ERA and 43 strikeouts. – All Polar League conferences – “He’s a fiery competitor on the mound, he throws hard and he’s getting better every day,” coach Ben Haugen said. “He’s been playing a lot of baseball this summer and he’s a big, strong lad. He’s only going to get better.” |
Sam Haugen ![]() Clint Austin / Duluth News Tribune – Paced the team with 36 hits from first place. Finished with a .424 batting average, 30 RBI, 30 runs and 16 extra hits to match a team high with Cale Haugen. – Compiled a 4-1 record on the bump with a 4.56 ERA and 25 strikeouts. – All Polar League conferences – “(He was) a freshman starter for us, and he was voted ‘Rookie of the Year’ by his teammates. He’s just had a fantastic offensive season,” coach Ben Haugen said. |
Caleb Hautajarvi ![]() Clint Austin / Duluth News Tribune – Posted a .469 batting average, best in any region, with 11 extra hits and 23 total hits. – Pitched the most innings for the Bombers (41.2) and posted a 1.344 ERA with 60 strikeouts. – All Polar League conferences – “Caleb had a great junior season this spring, leading the team offensively at the plate and defensively at the mound,” said coach Tony Bender. “(I) look forward to a great senior year from Caleb.” |
Henry Ribich ![]() Contribution / Henry Ribich – Hit a team-record nine extra hits, including a pair of homers. Finished third on the team in batting average (.311) while pacing the club in slugging percentage (.644) and on base plus slugging (1.167). – All Polar League conferences – “Henry has had a big impact on this team on and off the court all year, and really since his first day as a rookie,” said Moose Lake-Willow River coach Spencer Clough. “Henry comes to training every day with the desire to improve. He is always ready to put the team first in order to succeed.” |
Isaac Sertich ![]() Clint Austin / Duluth News Tribune – Posted a .423 batting average with 30 RBI and 27 runs scored as the team’s cleanup hitter. Had 30 hits with a pair of homers and eight doubles. – All Polar League conferences — “He was a freshman starter for us and really became one of our best hitters, and he kind of anchored the third base spot for us,” coach Ben Haugen said. (He’s a) great athlete, and he’s another kid who’s only going to get better.” |
