Bandits rally, but can’t overcome seven-point deficit | Midwest Baseball League

If the rest of the series goes the way it started for Zavier Warren, the Wisconsin third baseman may never want to leave Modern Woodmen Park.

Warren entered Tuesday with a .204 batting average and left Wednesday with .219, two home runs and five runs over the first five innings to send the Timber Rattlers en route to an 8-6 Midwest League win over the Quad Cities River. Bandits.

Warren homered in the first, third and fourth innings as Wisconsin took an 8-1 lead before the River Bandits rallied late, but were denied chances in the final two innings when the Timbers Rattlers made a pair of double plays.

Peyton Wilson of the River Bandits tied Warren with four hits and Kale Emshoff had four runs to help Quad Cities stay in a game when he blocked 17 runners on base and couldn’t get over the first cushion created by Warren.

Through two games in the current six-game series with the River Bandits, Warren went 7-for-10 at the plate with a single, two doubles, two triples and two homers while driving in eight runs.

“Warren is on fire. He hits the ball all over the place,” Conrad said. “They’re a good hitting team — they had 17 tonight — but Warren definitely set the tone the last two nights.”

He collected his first RBI on Wednesday in the first inning, giving the Timber Rattlers a 1-0 lead with a brace down the middle that scored Jackson Chourio.

The Brewers’ third-round selection in the 2020 draft from Central Michigan, Warren dropped his next two hits over the outfield fence.

Quad Cities had cut Wisconsin’s lead to 2-1 on a field single from Emshoff late in the first before Warren bounced a two-run homer off the top of the fence at center in a third inning by three points.

Warren extended the Timber Rattlers’ lead to 7-1 an inning later when he homered his ninth home run of the season on the Ferris wheel that sits above the grass berm beyond the fence from left field.

An Antonio Pinero single put Wisconsin (16-16, 52-45) ahead 8-1 midway through the fifth inning before Emshoff netted two runs for the River Bandits with a right-hand single.

The River Bandits took advantage of three consecutive walks – among nine thrown by Timber Rattlers pitchers – to shoot within 8-6 in six innings.

A wild pitch brought Diego Hernandez home with the first of three runs in the inning before Herard Gonzalez drove a run with a right-hand single before Emshoff collected his fourth RBI on a pitch that shot Quad Cities in two points.

Relievers Harrison Beethe, Zack Phillips and Anderson Paulino gave the River Bandits a chance late, combining for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

“Beethe and Phillips threw well and Paulino had it after giving up a few steps to charge the bases in the ninth, but those guys fought back, they kept us in it,” Conrad said.

Chourio, the top-ranked prospect in the Milwaukee organization, followed an 0-for-4 game Tuesday by joining Warren with four hits to lead Wisconsin’s 17-hit effort.
